I have recently found myself in one of the most difficult positions one can find themselves in: I have been made redundant from my old staff writing job. Like many people, I found my position was made untenable due to AI (in this case, the damn AI summaries). This has led to a major, and in this case, difficult change of moving back into the realm of the job hunter.

Now, as many of you may know, we have a serious jobs problem in the U.K. at the moment, and in the case of more creative career options, it is beset by the rise of AI. So, knowing that, I thought to chart my journey into the world of job seekers to give me an out, especially after passing the depression section of losing one’s job through no fault of their own. At this point, I have been looking for new work, and only today signed up for job seekers’ help, which mostly seems to include numerous actions that would constitute a failure on your part and lead to losing some of the money.

Of course, looking for work wouldn’t be the most interesting thing in the world, and there is a lot more that constitutes being unemployed. From social life, mental health and dating, being in this situation can have a huge impact on your life. So please, join me as I chart the difficulties of being unemployed in 2026.
